UHE Promotes Cervical Cancer Awareness among Students
he Women Development Centre of UHE organised a seminar on Cervical Cancer Elimination and Introduction of HPV Vaccine in Punjab in connection with International Day of Girl Child.
Prof. Dr. Faleeha Zahra Kazmi, VC UHE, Dr. Samra Khurram , Additional Director EPI Punjab, Dr. Jamshed Ahmed, Head WHO Punjab attended the seminar.
Dr. Samra Khuram said cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women globally with around 660 000 new cases and around 350 000 deaths in 2022. She said that human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common transmitted infection which can affect the skin, genital area and throat.
Prof. Kazmi said the theme of World Day 2024, “Girls’ vision for the future,†highlights the need to fully unlock the potential of the world’s more than 1.1 billion girls through support, education, and leadership opportunities.
She said being vaccinated at age 9–14 years is a highly effective way to prevent HPV infection, cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers, and students need to know about it.
The primary aimed of this seminar was to educate the audience about the dangers and causes of cervical cancer specifically its impact on women in low and middle income countries.
The important role of the HPV Vaccine in preventing this disease was discussed and the misconceptions and myths surrounding this vaccine were addressed.
Dr Qurat Ul Ain Ahmed, Health Lead UNICEF Punjab, Dr. Iram Rubab, Director WDC, Dr Aiza Qamar, HOD Nutrition & Health Promotion, Ms. Laiba Butt, Focal Person WDC, faculty members and students also attended the seminar.
